Selela is located in the northern part of Tanzania. It's part of the Monduli district, that belongs to the Arusha region. The village is situated along the road Mto wa Mbu - Engaruka - Lake Natron.
Selela consists of a village core and a subvillage that is called Mbaash, about 16 km away. However, the vast majority of people live in scattered settlements in the area.
The village is growing rapidly: 5,102 people were counted in the 2002 population census, ten years
later that number had risen to 8,703 (+71%).
In Selela many tribes are living peacefully together, the Maasai is by far the largest group.
